Bed bugs have become a significant nuisance in the last few years. This information is provided to help San Diego rental owners and residents become more informed about this problem and to reduce the likelihood of infestation.

Notify the Property Manager Immediately

The most important thing to note is that if you discover bed bugs in your unit, notify the property manager/landlord immediately. Left untreated, bed bug populations can become a serious concern. You should not attempt to eradicate them yourself.

Mature bed bugs are about the size and shape of an apple seed and are reddish-brown in color. They feed only on blood and leave behind a black stain. They are nocturnal and tend to live within a few feet of their hosts, preferring cooler spots such as mattresses and box springs, furniture cushions, and other personal belongings. They are not fast breeders but are fairly resilient.

Bed bugs typically live for 6-12 months but can survive for up to 18 months. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency, they DO NOT transmit disease and they DO NOT pose a major health concern.

Don’t be Embarrassed…

Claims that bed bugs are a result of, or associated with, poor hygiene and a lack of cleanliness are largely false. Bed bugs have made a comeback in recent years largely due to increased travel and the elimination of certain pesticides that were once used to control them. Ibmanelongglyc . They seem to invade fancy and expensive hotels and apartments as often as any other dwelling.

  • DO NOT obtain second hand furniture from unknown sources, dumpsters, etc. This is a primary source of bed bug infestation.
  • Use tight, synthetic encasement coverings for your mattress and box spring.
  • When traveling, thoroughly inspect luggage and other personal items prior to bringing them back to your home.
